I watched a program called Trains and Locomotives on Dish channel 232 a couple of weeks ago. They were talking about 3 narrow gauge railroads from Maine that were purchased by a cranberry grower in Massachusetts which became the Edaville Railroad. My wife's family owned the company (Hall's Hauling) that moved the trains from Maine to South Carver and when Edaville was having financial troubles, many of the original trucks now owned by others were used to move the trains back north.

I love narrow gauge trains! They are adorable! I have only ever ridden on two of them, one was a little steam engine like your first pic, and the other was a tiny little diesel, they were the coolest and most ridiculous trains I've ever been on! At any rate, Yay narrow gauge!

YUP... Lots of narrow gauge rails in the EU...

Many of them are cog trains to drag ppl and cargo up the mountains in Switzerland... I've been up to the Jungfaru Joch many times and revel in the infrastructure every time I ride up to 3400m. Neat stuff.

Some of the rolling stock used there on the lower support railways (WAB, with an impossibly narrow 80cm gauge !):

Over here in the U.S. we've got the Mount Washington Cog Railway , the first mountain climbing cog railway ever, as well as the second steepest (25% average grade, 37.41% maximum). For the most part they use four bio-diesel locomotives but they keep two steam ones in running condition and use them occasionally. It's been in operation since 1868.

That's right - I forgot that Mt. Washington has an old cog train, too. I just don't have any SR20 of that cog railway... I drove up Mt Washington a couple - wait - holy crap, 6 years ago (time flies) when we were on vaca in Bretton Woods... Very neat experience... It was chilly up there, even in August !

Pikes Peak also has a cog train... I am heading to Denver for work in a few weeks and I plan to rent a motorcycle and ride up Pikes Peak... Should be fun ;-)
